Baby Sleep Choices

With our Bednest co-sleeping bassinets on special at the moment, I’ve been doing a little research on the web about co-sleeping.  I came across a great episode on ABC’s Catalyst about baby sleep choices for families.

I love that they straight up acknowledge that parents are given mixed messages about what is best for baby. Having a newborn is such a confusing time.  No wonder so many mums and dads end up with post natal depression!

Dr James McKenna is interviewed, saying it is better for babies and mums to be within sensory range of each other, either in bed or within arms reach.

Sleeping and eating for babies is essential for them to grow – they double to triple the size of their brains in the first year of life (!!)

Dr McKenna also mentions that having mother and baby sleep separately from each other is not a medical or even a scientific truth, that it is a cultural construct whereas responsible co-sleeping reduces the risk of SIDS.
